### 3. Code Review & Refactoring ✅ COMPLETE

**Analysis**:

- Identified 3 areas for improvement
- Applied all Priority 1-3 refactorings

**Code Review Document**:
```
docs/project/CODE_REVIEW_GRAPHICS_INTEGRATION.md
```

**Score Card**:
| Aspect | Before | After | Improvement |
|--------|--------|-------|-------------|
| Functional Style | 9/10 | 9/10 | Maintained |
| Terseness | 7/10 | 9/10 | +28% |
| Readability | 9/10 | 9.5/10 | +5% |
| Error Handling | 10/10 | 10/10 | Maintained |
| Test Coverage | 9/10 | 9/10 | Maintained |
| **Overall** | **8.7/10** | **9.3/10** | **+7%** |

**Refactorings Applied**:

1. **Extracted Helper Function**:
```elixir
# Before: Duplicated 3 times
List.duplicate(List.duplicate(Cell.new(" "), width), height)
# After: DRY
defp empty_cell_grid(width, height)
```

2. **Flattened Nested Cases**:
```elixir
# Before: Nested case statements
case Map.get(pixel_buffer, {x, y}) do
  nil -> Cell.new(" ")
  color_index ->
    case Map.get(palette, color_index) do
      # ...
    end
end
# After: with expression + separate function
defp build_cell(buffer, palette, x, y) do
  with color_index when not is_nil(color_index) <- Map.get(buffer, {x, y}),
       {r, g, b} <- Map.get(palette, color_index) do
    Cell.new_sixel(" ", %TextFormatting{background: {:rgb, r, g, b}})
  else
    nil -> Cell.new(" ")
    _ -> Cell.new_sixel(" ")
  end
end
```

3. **Pattern Matching in Function Heads**:
```elixir
# Before: Variable extraction
defp pixel_buffer_to_cells(sixel_state, width, height) do
  pixel_buffer = sixel_state.pixel_buffer
  palette = sixel_state.palette
  # ...
end
# After: Pattern match in head
defp pixel_buffer_to_cells(%{pixel_buffer: buffer, palette: palette}, width, height) do
  # Direct use
end
```

4. **Test Suite Refactoring** (-45% code):
```elixir
# Before: Duplicated setup in each test
bounds = %{width: 10, height: 10}
opts = %{protocol: :sixel}
state = %{}
cells = ImageRenderer.render_image_content(data, opts, bounds, state)
# After: Helper function
cells = render_sixel(data, 10, 10)
# Before: Nested Enum.at calls
cell = Enum.at(Enum.at(cells, y), x)
# After: Helper function
cell = cell_at(cells, x, y)
# Before: Repeated assertions
assert length(cells) == 10
assert Enum.all?(cells, fn row -> length(row) == 10 end)
# After: Helper function
assert_grid_dimensions(cells, 10, 10)
```

## Functional Programming Patterns Used

### ✅ Idiomatic Elixir Patterns Applied:

1. **Pattern Matching**:
   - Function head pattern matching
   - Case statement pattern matching
   - Guard clauses in `with` expressions

2. **Comprehensions**:
   ```elixir
   for y <- 0..(height - 1) do
     for x <- 0..(width - 1) do
       build_cell(buffer, palette, x, y)
     end
   end
   ```

3. **with Expressions**:
   ```elixir
   with color_index when not is_nil(color_index) <- Map.get(buffer, {x, y}),
        {r, g, b} <- Map.get(palette, color_index) do
     # Success path
   else
     # Error handling
   end
   ```

4. **Pipe Operator**:
   ```elixir
   defp cell_at(grid, x, y), do: grid |> Enum.at(y) |> Enum.at(x)
   ```

5. **Higher-Order Functions**:
   ```elixir
   assert Enum.all?(cells, &(length(&1) == expected_width))
   ```

6. **No Mutable State**:
   - All functions are pure
   - No imperative loops
   - No variable reassignment

7. **Proper Error Handling**:
   - `{:ok, result}` / `{:error, reason}` tuples
   - Graceful fallbacks
   - No exceptions for control flow

## Lessons Learned

### What Worked Well:
1. **Incremental approach**: Implement → Test → Review → Refactor
2. **Pattern matching**: Reduces nested conditionals
3. **Helper functions**: DRY principle improves maintainability
4. **Test helpers**: Dramatically reduce test code
5. **with expressions**: Cleaner error handling

### Functional Patterns Applied:
1. Extract complex logic to named functions
2. Use `with` for nested conditional flows
3. Pattern match in function heads
4. Prefer comprehensions over imperative loops
5. Keep functions small and focused

### Code Review Insights:
- Look for duplication first (easy wins)
- Nested cases are a smell (flatten with `with`)
- Test setup duplication indicates need for helpers
- Typespecs document public interfaces
- Comments should explain "why", not "what"

---

## Next Steps

### Immediate (v2.0.1):
- ✅ Plugin Visualization Integration complete

- Consider adding property-based tests

### Future (v2.2+):
