# ADR-0006: Enterprise Security and Compliance Model

## Status
Implemented (Retroactive Documentation)

## Context

Enterprise deployment of terminal applications requires comprehensive security controls and compliance with various regulatory frameworks. Traditional terminal applications lack:

1. **Comprehensive Audit Trails**: No systematic logging of security-relevant actions
2. **Data Encryption**: Sensitive data stored in plaintext or with weak encryption
3. **Compliance Framework Support**: No built-in support for SOC2, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI-DSS requirements
4. **SIEM Integration**: No standardized security event export formats
5. **Tamper Detection**: No mechanisms to verify integrity of audit logs
6. **Access Controls**: Limited fine-grained permissions and role-based access

For enterprise adoption, Raxol needed security architecture that meets:
- **SOC2 Type II**: System and Organization Controls for service organizations
- **HIPAA**: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act for healthcare data
- **GDPR**: General Data Protection Regulation for EU data privacy
- **PCI-DSS**: Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard for payment processing
- **ISO 27001**: Information Security Management System requirements

## Decision

Implement a comprehensive enterprise security and compliance framework with cryptographic integrity, comprehensive audit logging, and multi-framework compliance support.

### Core Security Architecture

#### 1. **Audit Logging System** (`lib/raxol/audit/`)

**Centralized Audit Logger** (`lib/raxol/audit/logger.ex`):
```elixir
@type config :: %{
  enabled: boolean(),
  log_level: :debug | :info | :warning | :error | :critical,
  buffer_size: pos_integer(),
  retention_days: pos_integer(),
  encrypt_events: boolean(),
  sign_events: boolean(),
  alert_on_critical: boolean(),
  export_enabled: boolean(),
  siem_integration: map()
}
```

**Event Types** (`lib/raxol/audit/events.ex`):
- **AuthenticationEvent**: Login attempts, session management
- **AuthorizationEvent**: Permission checks, access control decisions
- **ConfigurationChangeEvent**: System configuration modifications
- **DataPrivacyEvent**: Personal data access, modification, deletion
- **ComplianceEvent**: Compliance-specific audit markers

#### 2. **Enterprise Encryption System** (`lib/raxol/security/encryption/`)

**Key Management** (`lib/raxol/security/encryption/key_manager.ex`):
- **AES-256-GCM encryption** for data at rest
- **Hardware Security Module (HSM)** support for key storage
- **Automatic key rotation** with configurable policies
- **Key derivation** using PBKDF2 with 100,000+ iterations
- **Key versioning** for backward compatibility

**Encrypted Storage** (`lib/raxol/security/encryption/encrypted_storage.ex`):
- **Field-level encryption** for sensitive data
- **Transparent encryption/decryption** in application layer
- **Multiple algorithm support**: AES-256-GCM, ChaCha20-Poly1305
- **Cryptographic signatures** for data integrity

#### 3. **Compliance Framework Integration**

**SOC2 Type II Controls**:
- Comprehensive audit logging of all system access
- Automated control testing and validation
- Change management tracking with approval workflows
- Security monitoring and incident response

**HIPAA Compliance**:
- Encrypted storage of all potentially sensitive data
- Access logging for Protected Health Information (PHI)
- User authentication and authorization controls
- Audit trail export for compliance reporting

**GDPR Privacy Controls**:
- Data subject access request (DSAR) automation
- Right to erasure (right to be forgotten) implementation
- Data processing activity logging
- Privacy impact assessment support

**PCI-DSS Requirements**:
- Encrypted storage of payment-related data
- Access control and authentication requirements
- Security monitoring and vulnerability management
- Regular security testing and compliance validation

#### 4. **SIEM Integration** (`lib/raxol/audit/integration.ex`)

Support for enterprise SIEM systems:
- **Splunk**: HEC (HTTP Event Collector) integration
- **Elasticsearch**: Direct indexing with proper mapping
- **IBM QRadar**: LEEF format event export
- **Microsoft Sentinel**: CEF format with Azure Log Analytics
- **Custom formats**: Configurable JSON/XML export

Example SIEM configuration:
```elixir
config :raxol, :audit,
  siem_integration: %{
    type: :splunk,
    endpoint: "https://splunk.company.com:8088/services/collector",
    token: System.get_env("SPLUNK_HEC_TOKEN"),
    source: "raxol_audit",
    sourcetype: "json_auto"
  }
```

#### 5. **Tamper-Proof Storage** (`lib/raxol/audit/storage.ex`)

**Cryptographic Integrity**:
- **Hash chains**: Each audit event references previous event hash
- **Digital signatures**: Events signed with system private key
- **Merkle trees**: Periodic integrity proofs for event batches
- **Immutable storage**: Write-only audit log with retention policies

**Verification System**:
```elixir
# Verify audit log integrity
{:ok, verification_result} = Raxol.Audit.Storage.verify_integrity(date_range)
# Check for tampering attempts
{:ok, tamper_events} = Raxol.Audit.Analyzer.detect_tampering()
```

### Security Architecture Patterns

#### Defense in Depth
1. **Network Layer**: TLS 1.3 for all communication
2. **Application Layer**: Input validation and sanitization
3. **Data Layer**: Field-level encryption and access controls
4. **Audit Layer**: Comprehensive logging and monitoring
5. **Physical Layer**: HSM integration for key security

#### Zero Trust Model
- Every request authenticated and authorized
- Least privilege access controls
- Continuous security monitoring
- Micro-segmentation of sensitive operations

## Implementation Details

### Audit Event Lifecycle
```elixir
# 1. Event Generation
audit_event = %AuthenticationEvent{
  actor: %{user_id: user.id, ip_address: remote_ip},
  action: "login_attempt",
  outcome: :success,
  resource: %{type: "session", id: session.id}
}
# 2. Event Enrichment (automatic)
enriched_event = Raxol.Audit.Logger.enrich_event(audit_event)
# 3. Event Signing and Storage
{:ok, stored_event} = Raxol.Audit.Logger.log(enriched_event)
# 4. Real-time Export to SIEM
Raxol.Audit.Integration.export_event(stored_event)
```

### Encryption Workflow
```elixir
# 1. Key Generation
{:ok, dek} = Raxol.Security.Encryption.KeyManager.generate_dek("user_data")
# 2. Data Encryption
{:ok, encrypted_data} = Raxol.Security.Encryption.encrypt(sensitive_data, dek)
# 3. Storage with Metadata
{:ok, _} = store_encrypted(encrypted_data, %{
  key_id: dek.id,
  key_version: dek.version,
  algorithm: dek.algorithm
})
```

### Compliance Reporting

## Alternative Approaches Considered

### 1. **Third-Party Security Platform**
- **Rejected**: Vendor lock-in and reduced control over security implementation
- **Reason**: Need for deep integration with terminal architecture

### 2. **Minimal Security (Authentication Only)**
- **Rejected**: Insufficient for enterprise compliance requirements
- **Reason**: Regulatory frameworks require comprehensive security controls

### 3. **External Audit Service**
- **Rejected**: Latency and availability concerns for real-time audit logging
- **Reason**: Performance requirements and data sovereignty concerns

### 4. **Database-Only Encryption**
- **Rejected**: Vulnerable to database compromise and insufficient granularity
- **Reason**: Need for application-layer encryption and field-level controls

The comprehensive security architecture provides the necessary controls for enterprise deployment while maintaining the performance and usability required for a terminal framework.
