A web UI for managing documents and testing search. The dashboard consists of multiple pages accessible via sidebar navigation.
Setup
0. Add the phoenix dependencies
Phoenix is an optional dependency: arcana's RAG core works in any app, and only the dashboard needs it. Phoenix apps already have these; otherwise add:

1. Add TaskSupervisor to your supervision tree
The dashboard requires ArcanaWeb.TaskSupervisor for async operations (Ask, Maintenance):

3. Optional: Markdown rendering for answers
Add mdex to your mix.exs if you want the Ask page to render
LLM answers as Markdown (paragraphs, bullet lists, bold, inline code,
etc.) instead of plain text:

Flavored Markdown parser built on the comrak Rust NIF, with built-in
HTML sanitization via ammonia. Arcana enables sanitization
unconditionally for the dashboard so any raw HTML the LLM emits
gets stripped before render. The dep is installed as a precompiled
NIF via rustler_precompiled, so you don't need a Rust toolchain
on your machine.
Without mdex, the Ask page falls back to plain-text rendering
and the page still works, but bullet markers and **bold** just
appear literally instead of being formatted.

By default the dashboard sees (and can mutate) every collection, so it's
superuser territory. The collections: option lets you expose it below
that level: a {module, function} pair that gets the %Plug.Conn{} of
the page request and returns either :all or the list of collection
names that user may touch.

endThe restriction applies everywhere, and fails closed:
- listings, search, ask, graph views, evaluation test cases and runs, and the header stats only cover the allowed collections
- ingest and maintenance actions must target an allowed collection; "All Collections" operations disappear
- events naming any other collection (including forged form payloads) are rejected server-side, not just hidden from the UI
- retrieval runs under
strict_collections: true, so an allowed collection that doesn't exist errors out instead of widening the search to everything - renaming a collection is blocked: a rename could otherwise move documents into a name another tenant is allowed to see
- an empty list means the dashboard shows and does nothing
When the decision is made
The MFA runs while the page request is served and its answer is
snapshotted into the signed LiveView session, which is valid for the
session max age (14 days by default). The websocket connect, reconnects
and in-dashboard live_patch/live_redirect all read that snapshot back
instead of calling the MFA again; only a full page request re-runs it.
Narrowing someone's permissions therefore doesn't narrow a dashboard they
already have open. The on_mount hook can't fix this by itself, since a
LiveView mount has no %Plug.Conn{} to re-resolve from.
Cut the socket when permissions change. Put a per-user live_socket_id
in the session and broadcast a disconnect:

MyAppWeb.Endpoint.broadcast("users_socket:#{user.id}", "disconnect", %{})The client then reconnects through a full request, which re-runs the MFA with the current conn. A shorter session max age puts a hard bound on how long a stale scope can survive without that broadcast.
It's a plain {module, function} tuple rather than a function capture
so the router metadata stays serializable. The option composes with
on_mount: auth hooks: use on_mount to decide who gets in, and
collections: to decide what they see once inside. It scopes the
dashboard only, not Arcana.search/2 or other API calls your app makes.
To mount two dashboards in one router (say a superuser one plus a scoped
one), give the second a unique live_session_name:.

Ask (/arcana/ask)
Three sub-tabs that map onto Arcana's three retrieval surfaces. The
URL preserves your selection (/arcana/ask/advanced,
/arcana/ask/pipeline, /arcana/ask/loop).
- Advanced (
Arcana.ask/2): one call with sensible defaults. Hybrid search, optional graph fusion, cross-encoder reranking, LLM answer. Use this when you want the library to make the decisions. - Pipeline (
Arcana.Pipeline): Modular RAG. Compose the steps yourself via toggles (gate, rewrite, expand, decompose, search, reason, rerank, answer, ground). Each step has its own checkbox. - Loop (
Arcana.Loop): Agentic RAG. The controller LLM picks tools each turn and decides when to commit. The settings panel shows which LLMs are configured for each role (controller, answerer, fallback synthesizer).
All three sub-tabs share:
- Collection selection - pick which collections to search (or for Pipeline, let the LLM auto-select)
- Live tracing - while a run is in flight, the retrieval steps
appear as a vertical timeline as they happen, color-coded by tool
type. Pipeline shows steps with running/done states and durations;
Loop shows tool calls with arguments and chunk counts. The trace
is powered by the
[:arcana, :pipeline, :*, :*],[:arcana, :loop, :tool_call], and related telemetry events - Markdown answers - when
mdexis in your deps (see Setup step 3), answers are rendered as formatted Markdown with safe HTML sanitization. Without it, answers fall back to plain text - Grounding - if Hallmark is configured, the dashboard renders hallucinated spans in red and faithful spans in green, with per-chunk attribution on hover

Deployment
The dashboard uses Phoenix LiveView. Ensure your production configuration includes:

Security Considerations
The dashboard provides full access to your Arcana data:
- Always add authentication in production
- Restrict to admin users who need access
- Consider IP allowlisting for sensitive deployments
